Presentation Part I: Extreme Scoping™: An Agile Approach to DW/BI Projects” by Larissa Moss

As you are working on your DW/BI project, you naturally draw upon your past experience with developing systems. But to your dismay, you find that, in spite of your experience, your DW/BI project is unusually frustrating. The requirements appear to be a "moving target;" communication between staff members takes too long; working tasks in a traditional way seems to result in too much rework, and using a traditional methodology does not work at all. To top it all off, the business users are pressuring you for quick deliverables (90 days or less) as they are still “fine-tuning” their requirements. As the project team scrambles to meet those expectations, data standardization is skipped, testing is cut short, documentation is not done, and quality is compromised. The end result is often an independent data mart or silo BI application. Sound familiar? Is it possible to do it right and still deliver in 90 days? It is – if you set aside the traditional system development methodologies and try a new approach. You need to create self-organizing project teams, use a spiral methodology, and apply Extreme Scoping™: an agile approach to DW/BI projects, which combines the disciplines of a spiral DW methodology with the agile development principles practiced on operational agile software development projects.

You Will Learn
*        Why traditional methodologies do not work on DW/BI projects
*        How to organize a DW/BI project using an agile software release concept
*        How to plan and manage your DW/BI project with the Extreme Scoping™ project planning process
